Academic English for International Students (AEIS)

The AEIS courses help international students develop advanced expertise in English and acculturate to the UO academic community. AEIS courses are credit-bearing and count toward UO graduation requirements. Students enroll in other UO courses simultaneously.  The only way to be exempt from the AEIS program is with a qualifying demonstration of English proficiency score contact the AEIS Advisor (aeisinfo@uoregon.edu) for more information.

AEIS Courses

In AEIS courses, students develop the skills they need for communication, cultural integration, and participation in the academic environment of the university.

Academic English courses at the 100 level carry graduation credit (4 credits per course) and are graded. AEIS courses are taught by faculty in the American English Institute (AEI).

Placement Testing

Placement testing helps to decide which courses students need, and students register for and complete their AEIS requirements in their first year of study. FAQs about placement testing can be found here

Global iFIGs (not being offered during Academic Year 2022-2023)

Global International First-Year Interest Groups (iFIGs) provide a great first-year experience for international students. This program is for students who enter UO in the fall term and whose placement test scores put them into a full, six-course load of AEIS courses. Students in Global iFIGs will take their required AEIS courses in a package with other university courses that satisfy core education requirements. The Global Program is required for students who test into a full load of AEIS courses

AEIS writing classes and Writing 121

Students who place into AEIS writing classes are strongly advised by the Composition Department to finish their AEIS writing requirements BEFORE taking Writing 121. AEIS writing classes help students become familiar with the basic conventions of American academic writing. Developing these skills in AEIS courses allows students to be more successful in Composition courses and avoid having to retake them. 121 transfer credit does NOT exempt students from taking AEIS writing classes.

Note: AEIS classes are paid with University tuition, not tuition paid directly to the AEI. The AEI does not charge the students for this service.

For questions about AEIS requirements or testing, see the FAQ's.

Registering for AEIS courses

After taking the AEIS Placement Test online, you will receive an email informing you of the AEIS courses that you need to take. During International Student Orientation (ISO) you will register for classes on DuckWeb. If you have questions about your AEIS courses, or have problems registering, AEIS Advisor will be available to assist you at the ISO. You can email the AEIS Advisor at aeisinfo@uoregon.edu.

If you register for a class that is lower than the level in which you were placed, you will receive credit for the course and your grade will be calculated into your UO GPA, but you will still need to complete the course you were placed into.

After students receive their AEIS Placement Test results, it is their responsibility be aware of which AEIS courses they need to take. This information is in the Degree Guide on Duckweb.

You can look at AEIS and UO course offerings through Schedule Builder on Duckweb or the UO Class Schedule. You can also talk to an AEIS advisor (aeisinfo@uoregon.edu).
