Advanced Certification in English Language Teaching (ACE)

The Advanced Certification in English Language Teaching (ACE) is a 200-hour online professional development program for English language teaching (ELT) professionals. This advanced certification consists of the following four courses, each 5 weeks in length (50 hours per course). This course certification helps participants to: 

  • Review ELT theory.
  • Apply theory to classroom practice.
  • Make meaningful changes in your own teaching practices.
  • Build relationships with a global cohort of language teaching professionals.
  • Develop professionally and share your knowledge.
  • Streamline the preparation process for UO's Language Teaching Specialization MA degree program.
  • Receive documentation of your 200-hour training from UO in the form of a certificate and Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Critical Thinking (Custom 5, 8, 9, 10 week course)

Course Topics and Learning Objectives:

  • Explain critical thinking and its significance to one's personal and professional life in written assignments and tasks.
  • Identify, analyze, and use critical thinking teaching techniques and materials by creating written activity plans, facilitating the activities with a group of students or colleagues, reviewing the activities, and revising them to create a final draft.
  • Assemble a portfolio of critical thinking classroom activities that have been facilitated, reviewed, and revised.

MOOC - Tell Your Story in English: Reading & Writing Skills for Language Learners

This free massive open online course (MOOC) is four weeks long. In it, students will develop English language skills by reading and writing personal stories, and sharing them with each other.

MOOC - Scientific Writing

Introduction to Scientific Writing is designed for non-native speakers of English. It will provide a basic foundation for academic scientific writing. It incorporates the building blocks of good writing in English language scientific journals, especially those based in the United States. Module topics include using appropriate grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, and avoiding plagiarism.

TESOL Methods (Custom 8, 9, 10 week course)

Course Topics and Learning Objectives:
  • Demonstrate understanding of the course material through online discussions with the instructor and peers.
  • Engage in reflection on how current teaching practices align with best practices in TESOL and what changes might be needed and why, via weekly discussions with the instructor and peers.
  • Apply modern TESOL teaching methods through completing a variety of tasks.
  • Create learning objectives for the courses they teach.
  • Create or locate effective alternative assessment instruments to evaluate student work.
  • Engage in different methods of peer feedback and self-assessment in order to improve the application of methods studied.
  • Give constructive feedback to peers on the final portfolio. Identify and select resources that will inform and influence future teaching practice.
  • Create a portfolio that documents and reflects on the learning and growth that has occurred as a result of course participation and assignment completion.
  • Create professional connections with colleagues in the field of English Language Learning and Teaching that continue beyond the scope of the TESOL Methods course.

Trace Effects: Gamification (Custom 5-10 week course)

Course Topics and Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the pedagogical possibilities of gamification and the Trace Effects game (student motivation, communicative language learning, task-based learning, etc.).
  • Collaborate with other course participants to create a learning community.
  • Use the Trace Effects game and integrate game activities into activity or lesson plans and curricular goals.
  • Use the Teacher’s Manual and other resources provided with the Trace teacher's materials to build supplemental activities into student use of the game.
  • As a final project, create an activity plan for integrating Trace Effects or other gamification techniques into their individual classrooms, to be shared with other teachers in the course.
  • Collect research data by observing game play, collecting game journals and worksheets, and possibly interviewing or surveying research participants.
  • Create a follow-up plan to use Trace Effects as part of language instruction.
