Scholarships

The AEI understands that English is important to helping people succeed in this global world. We feel underrepresented students looking to develop their English proficiency should be able to study in the Intensive English Program (IEP). The AEI has awarded need-based tuition scholarships to community partnerships, including Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (E-LAW) and Mobility International USA (MIUSA). The AEI is proud to add the Janet Hughes Mersereau Scholarship to our funding opportunities. People with or without disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Funding for the 2023-2024 academic year is no longer available, therefore no applications are currently being accepted.

Janet Hughes Mersereau Scholarship

The purpose of this fund is to provide annual awards for students enrolled in the Intensive English Program in the American English Institute (AEI) at the University of Oregon (UO). Thanks to a generous donation on behalf of Janet Hughes Mersereau, the AEI is able to award several partial and/or four two-term competitive scholarships to intensive English students. Scholarships apply to the Intensive English Program (IEP) tuition only. Awardees will be responsible for remaining costs, including (but not limited to) the AEI fees (application, testing, etc.), airfare, visa application costs, UO health insurance, UO mandatory fees, and room and board. All costs are available on the AEI website.

The Janet Hughes Mersereau scholarship asks students to serve as ambassadors for the program, speaking with prospective students about their experience in the AEI and at the UO. Scholarships are based on language ability, academic merit (3.0 GPA), and future goals (per a first draft essay).

Janet Hughes Mersereau and
Brad Mersereau

Students from Brazil, Haiti, Palestine, and Saudi Arabia have benefitted from the Janet Hughes Mersereau Scholarship. Sadly, Janet passed away on August 5, 2019. Her obituary summarizes her rich life and the causes she valued. It is an honor that AEI is among the organizations she funded.
