Academic Writing

These are 2-hour courses required for students who plan to enter academic programs. They are content-based courses linked to the topics in the Discussion Course.

  • Fluency Writing: This course is for students in levels 0-2 and focuses on increasing writing fluency through journals. Students read, listen to, and watch materials on a given topic and then explore related ideas through activities in journals and in-class writing. Students also learn how to write about their opinions.
  • Academic Writing Paragraphs: This course is required for students entering level 3 or who place into level 4 their first term. This course focuses on paragraph writing using sources from the content course as support. Students read, listen to, and watch materials on a given topic and then explore related ideas through paragraph writing. This course also introduces and practices academic summary writing, and you will summarize main points and important supporting information from the materials. You also write short responses to writing prompts related to the given topic.
  • Academic Writing Essays: This course is required for students entering level 5 or who place into level 6 their first term. This course focuses on essay writing, introducing the use of synthesis as support. Students read, listen to, and watch materials on a given topic and then explore related ideas through essay writing. This course works on using information from several sources as support for essay ideas, and students learn to synthesize the information in coherent ways.
