The University of Oregon (UO) American English Institute (AEI), a unit of the College of Arts and Sciences, has been a leader in providing online and blended or "hybrid" programs and courses for English language learners and teachers since 1996. During this time we have served thousands of English educators and learners digitally, on the UO campus, and on site in more than 200 countries worldwide.​

Advanced Certification in English Language Teaching (ACE)
September 25, 2017 - March 23, 2018

The next Advanced Certification in English Language Teaching (ACE) starts Fall 2017. This is a 200-hour online professional development program for English language teaching professionals, made up of four 5-week courses.

MOOC - Tell Your Story in English: Reading & Writing Skills for Language Learners
Winter 2017: February 27th - March 26th, 2017

This free massive open online course (MOOC) is four weeks long. In it, students will develop English language skills by reading and writing personal stories, and sharing them with each other.

MOOC - Scientific Writing
Winter 2017: February 27th - March 27th, 2017

Introduction to Scientific Writing is designed for non-native speakers of English. It will provide a basic foundation for academic scientific writing. It incorporates the building blocks of good writing in English language scientific journals, especially those based in the United States. Module topics include using appropriate grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, and avoiding plagiarism.

Custom Online Programs and Courses

For two decades the AEI has been providing custom programs for government ministries, universities and other institutions, and organizations from around the world. Programs can be designed to suit all of your group's professional and academic needs. To make the most of your learning, study packages can also be combined with AEI faculty visits to your location and/or time on the UO campus in combination with a variety of extra-curricular cultural and recreational activities. Programming can be structured:

  • As non-credit
  • For Continuing Education Units
  • For credit through an accredited partnering overseas institution or official body such as a Ministry of Education
  • For credit through UO (additional admission criteria and costs may apply)

Online

AEI has provided high quality online teacher training to thousands of English language educators in more than 200 countries through projects such as the E-Teacher Scholarship Program, Shaping the Way We Teach English, and in direct partnerships with Ministries of Education worldwide. UO AEI can meet English language teaching and training needs fully online upon request.

The Women Teaching Women English program, developed by UO AEI and delivered in partnership with the U.S. Embassy Beirut and the Hayya Bina organization, has served thousands of adult females with beginning level English tailored that meets their needs and interests. UO AEI can provide similar such programming in a combination of online and on-site work to meet specific needs.

Curriculum Research and Development

For the Oregon-Iraq Guided Online English Studies, UO AEI faculty provided parallel English language academic preparation materials and English language teacher training for hundreds of educators and students in more than a dozen institutions throughout Iraq and Kurdistan. UO AEI can provide a cost quote for:
