Students at any level of English language study can benefit from studying at the AEI. We offer seven proficiency levels of classes, from beginning through advanced. The IEP offers a comprehensive curriculum of core classes, electives, and extracurricular programming designed to meet the academic needs and interests of our English language learners.

CORE COURSES

Courses are designed to create a positive and effective English learning environment within the larger university campus. Content builds linguistic, inter-cultural, and contextual skills for seamless success into the U.S. educational system.

Each learning level is divided into two core courses, Reading/Writing/Grammar (RWG) and Oral Skills (OS). Depending on  demonstrated proficiency and placement results, students may be placed in separate skill levels.

IEP STUDENTS' WEEKLY SCHEDULE

All full-time students take two basic curriculum courses, for a total of 18 hours of required in class hours per week. In addition, students can take up to 6 additional hours of interest-based elective courses.

CLASS SIZE

Classes are small, which ensures personal attention for each student. Students attend at least 18 hours of classes per week, but have the option to extend it to 24 hours if they also choose elective classes. Students are usually assigned homework. Outside of class, they can meet with an American tutor, who can help them with their work or just have a conversation.

Students are usually very busy learning English, attending classes, doing homework, and meeting with tutors. However, those who would like even more practice are given full access to the Yamada Language Center, which is equipped with hundreds of language-learning software programs and fully-equipped computer work stations for students’ use.
