The American English Institute (AEI) is part of the Linguistics Department at the University of Oregon (UO). The faculty work closely together in areas of language acquisition and language teacher training. Following are some of the programs we are currently offering.

 

 

M.A. IN LINGUISTICS

The Linguistics Department offers a 5-term Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Linguistics with a Language Teaching Specialization. This program combines theory and practice with many opportunities to observe classes and to practice teaching. Several of the AEI faculty members who have PhD degrees teach in this program.

JOINT TESOL CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The UO Linguistics Department offers a joint 6-month TESOL Certificate Program in Korea with a leading Korean university. Students from the Hanyang-UO Joint Program in Korea may transfer credits to the UO Linguistics Department to complete the M.A. degreeat University of Oregon. The credits may also be transferred to M.A. programs at several other U.S. universities.

SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING CERTIFICATE

Undergraduates and post-baccalaureate students can earn a Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (SLAT) certificate in order to learn about second language acquisition and teaching. Students earning this certificate are typically interested in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) internationally, and many of them find jobs overseas after graduating.

SHORT-TERM TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMS

The AEI offers several 2-4 week teacher training programs on campus, specially designed for universities, government agencies, and schools. Programs combine theory, practice, visits to public schools, and teacher observations of classes using the latest teaching methods. AEI faculty provide practical workshops on a variety of topics.

ONLINE DISTANCE LEARNING

The AEI is a leader in providing online teacher training programs for language teachers. We have been offering videoconferencing and online distance education courses to EFL teachers throughout the world for more than 10 years. Programs have included topics in: 

  • General Language Teaching Pedagogy, Trends, and Best Practices.

  • Critical Thinking in the Language Learning Classroom

  • Teaching English to Young Learners.

  • Computers and Language Learning.

  • Business English.

  • English for Specific Purposes.

OVERSEAS CONSULTING AND WORKSHOPS

AEI faculty members are available for overseas consulting and workshops.  They have conducted teacher training workshops in various countries, including:

  • Europe: Austria, France, Germany, Holland, Italy and others.

  • Eastern Europe: The Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Ukraine.

  • North, Central, and South America: Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Chile, and Peru.

  • Middle East: Bahrain, Jordan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Syria, U.A.E., and Yemen.

  • Africa: Benin, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Libya, Morocco, Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia.

  • Asia: Burma, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
