Academic and Student Services for Intensive Program Students

ACADEMIC SERVICES

Orientation and Counseling
Upon admission to the Intensive Program, AEI sends students detailed information about immigration and visa matters, travel to Eugene, airport pick-up, first days in the United States, housing, banking, and other important information. The week before classes begin, the AEI provides extensive orientation for all new students. This includes introductions to the AEI and its staff, placement testing, and tours of the campus and a recreational outing. The AEI provides an academic Advisor for general counseling, assistance with college and university admissions, and help with immigration and visa matters.

Office of International Programs (OIP)
This office provides a full range of information and advising about visas and immigration issues for international students on campus.

Students with Disabilities
The AEI welcomes international students with disabilities. Classrooms and most other buildings at the University of Oregon are wheelchair accessible. The Eugene community provides ramps and accessible bathrooms in most stores, restaurants, and theaters. Eugene's bus system is also completely wheelchair accessible.

STUDENT SERVICES

Airport Pick-up Service
The AEI provides free airport pick-up service to new students arriving at the Eugene Airport. Students who would like to use this service need to contact the AEI to provide their complete flight information one week before their arrival.

Tutoring
Trained and supervised University of Oregon students act as tutors to help students individually with language questions, conversation, listening, reading, writing, and pronunciation.

University Coursework
Students in the highest level of the core curriculum may enroll in one University of Oregon academic course. This opportunity is available at no additional cost. Approval of the academic adviser is required.

No TOEFL Requirement for UO
Students who successfully complete the AEI's Intensive English Program may enroll in one University of Oregon course without a TOEFL score. Approval of the academic adviser is required.

Activities
Field trips and social activities are scheduled each term. Field trips frequently include activities throughout scenic Oregon, such as skiing, hiking, and canoeing. Some activities require small additional fees for items such as transportation and equipment rental.

YAMADA LANGUAGE CENTER

AEI Student Support
AEI students use the University of Oregon's state-of-the-art Yamada Language Center. This center opened in 1991 to serve students and faculty members studying and teaching languages at the University of Oregon. YLC staff assist students with email and Internet applications in English and many other languages.

Computers
The YLC Labs just across and down the hall from the AEI Main Office. Word processing and other common software applications are also available for student use.
